Wednesday Hodgepodge - Volume 635

Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge!  Here are this week's questions, which you should answer on your own blog and then pop over to Joyce's blog (click on the graphic for the link) Wednesday to add your link to the party.

From this Side of the Pond

1. What are three words you would use to describe your 2025?

Fun (Vic and I always have fun), awesome (a local trip and an overseas adventure, what's not to love?), and busy (Vic is always crazy busy at work and even though I sometimes feel like I don't have a lot to show for my days, they seem to fly by).

2. I ask this question every January, and I always get comments about how we shouldn't be banning words. This is fun and games so just play along : )

Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse, or just general uselessness (go here to read about how the words are chosen). Here's the list for 2026-

67 • demure • cooked • massive • incentivize • full stop • perfect • gift/gifted  • my bad • reach out

Which one (if any) do you use most often? Which one of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word you think should have made the list?

I suppose massive is the one I use most often.  I'm completely lost with 67, banish that one, it just seems pointless.  One that I find irritating is share.  A former co-worker used it all the time as in "I'd like to share this with you" which usually meant some gossip or something unpleasant about someone else was coming.  I don't necessarily think it should be banished but I use it very sparingly and never in the context I just mentioned.

3. What are your nightly rituals? Is that different from your 'ideal' nightly ritual? If so what's your ideal?

LOL, I wish I had a nightly ritual!  My ideal ritual would be a hot bath, hand and foot pampering, and peaceful sleep.  Not happening.  We have showers in this house, hand and foot pampering are usually forgotten, and Vic snores like a chain saw...until I nudge him to roll over onto his side and then he stops...for a little while.

4. January 6th is/was National Bean Day. Do you like beans? Which one is your favorite? Last thing you ate made with beans?

I love beans.  Beans on toast is one of my favorite meals - Heinz Baked Beans when I can get them or a close substitute, Bush's Vegetarian Beans.

Last thing I made with beans (navy) was a bean soup with the leftover ham from Christmas and it was SO salty.  Mega-fail there.

5. Are you easily embarrassed? Elaborate.

I wouldn't say that I was, but I get emotional very easily - the last thing I watched that made me cry was a video, and I can't even remember what it was.  A wedding perhaps or a youngster on one of the talent shows who sang like an angel.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

And of course, I had a random thought the other day and did I write it down? No.  Do I remember it now?  No.  I'm hopeless.

  1. I nudge my husband, too, when he snores and that helps for a little bit! Completely agree at 67. The pointlessness of it gripes me. Just no! I´m glad your 2025 was a mostly positive one as was mine! Have a great day!

  2. I love the words you used to describe your 2025 and I agree, 67 should be banished. There is no point to it.
Your ideal nightly ritual would be my ideal one too. I have a snorer here as well which really messes with my sleep!
It made me so happy that you mentioned baked beans. They are my favourite too but I much prefer the cheaper supermarket own brands to Heinz, they're more full of flavour with thicker sauce.

  3. I do not think I have ever tried beans on toast. That is a new one to me...but one I think I could enjoy!! Happy Wednesday to you!

  5. Each time I see or hear "67" I think of that old riddle:
    Why was 6 afraid of 7...because 789. :)

I've heard about beans on toast forever, and always have questions. May I ask a few? Does one simply use beans straight from the can onto a piece of white bread toast, or does one dress it up in some way, and if so, how? Anything served along with it? Just want a clearer picture in my mind next time I see it in a book or blog. :) Thx

    1. Straight from the can, heated, and right onto the toast. Nothing on the side unless you want to add bacon or sausage but it's a meal on its own.

  6. I also say massive, and dislike the word share in that context. I'm glad you picked such positive words to describe your 2025!
