Welcome to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Here are this week's questions, which you should answer on your own blog and then pop over to Joyce's blog (click on the graphic for the link) Wednesday to add your link to the party.
1. When someone finds out what you do or where you're from, what's a question they always ask?
The question is usually where did Vic and I meet and when I say Saipan, the comment is always "Where is that?"
2. Did you participate in 'Greek Life' when you were in college, or have children who did? If so, what was your experience like? Taking another tack...have you ever been to Greece? If not, is that a destination on your bucket list?
No, I did not participate in Greek Life as I went to college when I was in my 30s, a Navy wife, and mother of a toddler. There were no sororities or fraternities at my daughter's college, as students have repeatedly voted them down, feeling that these organizations run counter to the school’s ethos of diversity and inclusion. I have never been to Greece and it's not really on my bucket list...too hot. If we take a Mediterranean cruise, there will no doubt be a stop in Greece, but I'd have to plan carefully to visit when it's not so hot.
3. Do you like Greek food? If so what's your favorite dish?
For a savory dish, I love souvlaki with tzatziki. For sweets, I love baklava and loukoumades.
Our most popular Greek street food consists of small pieces of meat grilled on a skewer. Souvlaki can be eaten straight off the skewer, wrapped in pita, or on a plate as a sit-down meal with tzatziki, fries and vegetables on the side. Traditionally it is made from pork or chicken, although beef, lamb and vegetarian versions can be found. Its name comes from “souvla”, meaning spit, and the diminutive suffix “-aki”, therefore the small spit = the skewer.
4. What incredibly common thing have you never done?
This is a tough one and I'm drawing a blank. Maybe not participated in most water-related activities like water skiing, rafting, canoeing, or kayaking? It just doesn't appeal to me. I swam in the sea when I was younger, and I might be tempted to dip my toes in the water somewhere like Hawaii, but apart from that, I'm not really bothered.
5. What is a telltale sign that you're upset?
I get very quiet. I can have a temper so if I feel that I'm on the edge, I go silent, so I don't say something I'll regret.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Are you a DeWalt, Ryobi, Milwaukee, or Makita house?
I did a year of college immediately out of high school and then put it on hold to get married and have children. I returned to college in my 40’s. Greek life was not an option for me given my circumstances.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have many wonderful stories given your travels as a navy wife!
I knew where Saipan is, I don't know how I know but it's in my head. Ohh! I hadn't thought of baklava, yum!
ReplyDeleteI haven't done any water sports either apart from swimming.
hahaha! That is so true about the tools. My fella is DeWalt and my dad is Makita.
I love baklava but it's something I would never make, too much faff!
DeleteI love the four houses meme : ) I know your husband was in the military. Were you in Saipan with the military as well? It's not a place you hear about often. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteNo, I moved to Saipan from California (via Guam) to take a job in the cable industry. Vic came to work for our company from the Philippines. He joined the Navy from Saipan.
DeleteI'm with you on the water stuff. I don't even know how to swim.
ReplyDeleteI saw a news report that an alligator snapping turtle was found in a lake near us. Another reason I don't care for the water!
DeleteI'd love to go on a Mediterranean cruise but I definitely do not want to tour when it's going to be super hot either; I've heard May is supposed to be lovely there. My guys mostly have Dewalt but I know we have some Riobi and I think Makita too.
ReplyDeleteI need to check the annual temperatures to see the best time to visit Greece. I seem to remember Facebook friends who posted a picture from February and they were wearing coats!
DeleteMy husband uses mostly Ryobi and sometimes Dewalt. I haven't done many water activities mainly because we don't live near a large body of water and don't have a boat. I have never jet skied and have only canoed maybe once. I don't think I'd mind if we lived closer to water but we don't so I don't do the water activities often if ever at all.
ReplyDeleteWe could boat or canoe or kayak as there is water all around us, but it seems like such a faff (word from Kim's Tuesday post!) to load up all the necessary items, trek to the water, unload them, get hot and sweaty using them, and then load and unload them all again. No, thanks!
DeleteThe four houses - so funny! I have never been so hot as our trip to Rome in June! It would probably be ok now that I am used to the Texas heat again, but at the time we were living in the UK and temps in the 80s felt very hot!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely an early spring or late fall traveler. Let's get that blazing sun out of the way!
DeleteI had only a vague idea of where Saipain is, so thanks for the map to help me! The four houses meme cracked me up!! I don't think my husband has a dedicated favorite, but my son has been House of Makita since he was sixteen, long before he became a dad. LOL
ReplyDeleteHope you're having a great week!
