If this is Tuesday, it must be England #165

It has been a year since the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Much has been written about the Coronation Roll, the official record of the Monarch’s Accession and Coronation and it is now online for the first time here.

The Roll contains details of The King’s accession, the planning of the Coronation, and a detailed description of the ceremony.  Rolls include the monarch’s oath to govern according to the customs and laws of the realm and detail the ceremonial of the coronation - the prayers, the service, the blessings, the order of service, and official guests. For centuries the roll has been authored by the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery.

The Coronation Roll is 21-metres long, which is about two-and-a-half times as long as a London bus and contains 11,600 words and makes for very interesting reading.

Princess of Wales Cancer Statement

Very sorry to read this announcement.  I share just a couple of the sentiments posted by commenters on the Facebook post from the What Kate Wore website.

Absolutely disgusting the way Kate has been treated, no one knows what a family is going through. She needed time to recover from her surgery, then after found out she has cancer. They needed time as a family, to speak to the children who are all under 11 years old. So they fully understood what was going on, before the media started reporting it. It’s really sad that Kate has had to make a video, telling the world what’s going on. Instead of coming to terms with her diagnosis, while receiving chemotherapy.  Shame on the media, and all those making up wild accusations & conspiracy theories. I wish Kate well on her cancer journey, and send strength. Hopefully now she can continue, this journey & her treatment in peace. Without all this intrusion.  Wishing her a full and speedy recovery.

 I am furious on her behalf. It is abhorrent that internet and media trolls pushed her to this point with their spiteful, unending conspiracy theories. Do they feel better now they know what she’s been coping with while they’ve been piling on. She is so gracious in the face of all this, but she should have been giving the space she asked for at the beginning. I hope people can now give this beautiful family time to heal and cope in privacy.

Heartbreaking, both about her condition and that, in my opinion, she was forced to go public about her condition. What she says in there about needing to process with the kids and that being her focus is spot on. Wishing you a full recovery, Princess!

One Year Ago Today

 One year ago today saw the death of Queen Elizabeth II.  I was at work and I'd flipped over to the news and saw a report that Her Majesty's condition was being closely monitored by her doctors, then family members arrived at Balmoral, and shortly thereafter, her death was announced.  Where were you when you heard?

It was the end of an era and tributes poured in from all over the world.  There were enormous queues, hours long, as people waited to pay their respects to the flag-draped coffin carrying the only monarch many of them had ever known, and hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets of London on the day of her funeral, while millions watched around the world.

Today, King Charles III sent the following message accompanied by a previously unseen photo of Her Majesty.

If this is Tuesday, it must be England #139

I collected stamps when I was younger but it was a passing phase.  Over my adult years, Mum would often send me first day covers of new stamps issued in the UK of special events - the weddings of Charles and Diana, and then of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson among many.  I keep my eye on the Royal Mail website and occasionally pick up a presentation pack for things that commemorate special events.

This set is coming June 24 and I will definitely be adding it to my collection.

If this is Tuesday, it must be England #126 (moved to Saturday for this special celebration)

Happy 39th Birthday today to Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge.  Since there was no gathering of the Royal Family for Christmas, there was no walk back from church on Christmas Day with all the beautiful coats and hats on display so I've picked another occasion to share with you.  I love that all of these coats were from her existing wardrobe, a nice touch in these austere times.  How I would love to take a peek at the Duchess' coat closet!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge undertook a Nationwide tour of three days on the request of the British Government in December 2020. The 1250 miles long tour saw the Royal couple thanking the UK frontline workers, organizations and communities for their generosity during the pandemic that kept the country going.

If this is Tuesday, it must be England #118

Happy 36th Birthday today to Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.

Oh, Harry, what can I say?  Sentebale, ten years as part of The Royal Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry, and the Invictus Games.  You did marvelous work for charity and no doubt, in other ways, you will continue but something has gone horribly wrong.  Yes, there are those who believe that the monarchy needs to come into modern times much more than it has but your way, stepping away, breaking away, has only caused dissension and fodder for the sensational press.  I'm so disappointed.

You gave up a lot for love, I hope it will have a happy ending.

Life Last Week 2018-28

The weather:::
 Fall made a brief appearance - we went to an evening concert on Saturday wearing jeans and fleece jackets.  Sadly, it's going to be 83 degrees today.

On my reading pile:::
Working my way slowly through Coffee, Tea or Me? The Uninhibited Memoirs of Two Airline Stewardesses by Trudy Baker and Rachel Jones with Donald Bain

On my TV:::
Finished Reign and moved on to The Tudors on Netflix while I was working on Project Life.  A Place to Call Home Season 6 on Acorn and The Durrells in Corfu Season 3 and Poldark Season 4 on PBS.  Caught the new movie, 22 July, on Netflix.  I remembered the event from the news but had no idea of the aftermath of the incident.

Checked off the list:::
  • The first two of several farewell lunches.
  • The call to start the septic system installation at our house in Rhode Island - the work won't actually start for a couple of weeks but this is the official time marker for the project.
Crafts roundup:::
Still finishing up the last few weeks of Project Life catch-up.

And in other news:::
High five for those of you who figured out that something was up with (or should I say under?) this blue coat - yes, The Duchess of Sussex is pregnant, baby due in the spring.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Certainly unlike any other Royal Wedding I’ve ever watched or read about - enough pomp and circumstance to make it British but modern, inclusive, a bit fiery, full of symbolism, embracing youth and roots and philanthropy, a little sad that Diana was not able to see it. Stunning dress, amazing fashion on the guests, loved every minute of it.

The Royal Wedding is tomorrow!

Just in case you haven't turned on your TV, or read a newspaper or magazine lately, the Royal Wedding is tomorrow.  Prince Henry (Harry) of Wales will marry American Meghan Markle in St. George's Chapel at Windsor. Here's a great little guide to the schedule for the big day.

Apart from the excitement of seeing the bride's dress, I'm also looking forward to seeing if Princess Beatrice can sport even more extreme millinery than the last two creations she donned for a royal wedding (her cousins Peter Phillips' wedding in 2008 and Prince William's in 2011).  How far over the top will she go?

If this is Tuesday, it must be England #93

Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their new prince and doesn't she look fabulous?  Anxiously waiting to hear the little one's name - Arthur, Edward, Thomas, and Philip are the front runners so far but we'll just have to wait and see.

If this is Tuesday, it must be England #86

Not one, but two royal weddings are on the calendar for 2018.  First Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and now Princess Eugenie of York has announced her engagement to Jack Brooksbank.

It's time for a Happy Dance!

20 Years Ago Today

Where were you, what were you doing 20 years ago when you heard the news that Diana, Princess of Wales, was dead?  I was asleep in Florida; Vic was deployed on a cruise circumnavigating South America and when the phone rang, I thought it was him calling but it was my friend Denise from California, another staunch monarchy fan, calling to tell me.  I turned on the news and didn't really move far from it for the next week until after her funeral was over.  The People's Princess, such a tragedy.

Her legacy lives on in her sons.  What an amazing grandmother she would have been.

Diana, Princess of Wales

In loving memory of Diana, Princess of Wales; who on this day would have celebrated her 56th birthday. She would have delighted in her grandchildren, George and Charlotte, and they would have found her the most glamorous grandma who was full of fun.  We remember Diana, for her dedication to charitable causes that brought attention to issues of great importance. Diana was, and will forever remain, the People’s Princess.
