Here are this week's questions, which you should answer on your own blog and then pop over to Joyce's blog (click on the graphic for the link) Wednesday to add your link to the party.
1. At the end of every year (or at least since the mid-1970's) Lake Superior State University posts a list of words they think should be banished from the Queen's English for misuse, overuse, and/or general uselessness. You can read more about the decision making process here, but this year's list includes-
Which of these words/phrases do you use regularly or even just every now and then?
I've used all but one of these at one time or another.
How many did you have to look up? One.
"Skibidi" refers to a series of surrealist videos popular on YouTube, which features an army of human-headed toilets fighting a war against another army of camera-headed men, according to Forbes. Skibidi as a slang word is largely meaningless and is a simple reference to the video series.
I've never heard the word skibidi and I have to confess, the explanation sounds ridiculous.
Which of these words would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why?
I don't feel that any of them need to be banished. IFKYK gets a bit tiresome, but sometimes it's really applicable and humorous.
Is there a word/phrase not on the list you'd like to add? If so, do share, then tell us why.
I'd like to banish the "F" word. It's everywhere and so grating on the ears. I think people use it for emphasis, for shock factor, and enough is enough, it's time for it to go.
2. Your favorite soup? Do you make this one yourself or is it from a can?
Something made with a leftover ham bone. I've made it myself, usually after Christmas, but I also enjoy Campbell's Bean with Bacon. We used to eat a lot of Knorr Oxtail Soup when I was growing up, but I haven't seen it in ages. Scotch Broth was another, I love barley in soup.
3. How do you feel about winter? What's one winter activity you look forward to?
I love winter and my favorite activity is to admire a snowy landscape from the warmth of my home, preferably with hot cocoa, an old movie, and a cozy blanket close by. It's been a few years since I've been sledding but it was a lot of fun at the time.
4. The Pantone color of the year for 2025 is mocha mousse (sample pictured here). What say you? The website describes it as 'a warming, brown hue imbued with richness. It nourishes us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort'. Is this a color I might find in your home or wardrobe? Is it one you might add in some big or small way in the year ahead?
I think it's pretty, but I would worry about it being a bit too dark for a room so no, it's not something I would add.
In a similar, but not really vein...if I were to offer you a choice right now of either a cup of mocha or a cup of mousse which would you say yes to?
A cup of mousse!
5. Which of the following winter related idioms can best be applied to your life in some way right now? Choose one, then tell us why you chose it.
snowed under, on thin ice, tip of the iceberg, chill out, break the ice, snowball effect, not a snowball's chance in hell, get cold feet, the cold shoulder
Sometimes I feel snowed under by the length of the list of everything that we want to do to this house (none of it really needs doing but it's just personal touches we want to make here and there) and so there's not a snowball's chance in hell that it's all going to get done, lol.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
A life well-lived. Rest in Peace, Sir.
OH yes, I'd pick chocolate mousse too! That looks delicious. I love a good soup and, in fact, added a different one to our menu each week this month.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to have never heard the word skibidi! It's popular with the middle school set!
ReplyDeleteI think I have used all those words in a sentence apart from skibidi! It is a ridiuclous word used by the young people. lol
ReplyDeleteAhh! I have just stocked up on tins of soup, oxtail and Scotch Broth included!
I made a yummy bean soup using the ham bone left over from Christmas dinner. My hubs just finished it off yesterday and he said it was one of his favorites ever. I used fresh beans as opposed to canned and soaked them overnight. I don't know if that's what made it better than the other times, but it was good. Have a great day! Our house list is never ending too!
ReplyDeleteI love soups made with a leftover ham bone too. That's how I grew up -- whenever we had ham for Sunday dinner, a split pea soup was sure to follow!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am so with you on the F-word. Likewise the S-word (synonym for poop). People use it in all kinds of contexts. Both of these words seem ubiquitous on giftware (like mugs and novelty socks for example), and I am just so tired of all this unnecessary vulgarity.
Aha, another Campbells bean and bacon fan! I didn't put that on my answers, but it is one of my favorites. I agree about the F word, especially in movies and tv. No one that I know says that many F words (maybe every once in awhile in a dire situation), so I always wonder if people really talk that way.
