Happy New Year - wishing you all health, wealth, and happiness for 2025. Do you make new year's resolutions? I'll be coming back to blogging. I have missed it so, and missed all of you, but life gets in the way, doesn't it? Here's to another new start for The Lady of the House Speaking!
Kicking right off with the Wednesday Hodgepodge. Here are this week's questions, which you should answer on your own blog and then pop over to Joyce's blog (click on the graphic for the link) Wednesday to add your link to the party.
1. Oxford's Word of the Year for 2024 is 'brain rot'. Are you familiar with this term? Do you suffer from this condition? This is a term used to 'capture concerns about the impact of consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, especially on social media'. If you were choosing a word to capture 2024 (for the nation/world, not your own life personally) what word would you choose?
I haven't heard this term before, but I will admit to suffering from it. I click on a reel on Facebook and that's it, I've gone down a rabbit hole of low-quality online content (ie. trash) and I just can't seem to tear myself away! Need.to.do.better. As far as a word for the nation/world, how about repair? There are so many systems, processes, laws, regulations, you name it that need an overhaul.
2. It's National Polar Bear Plunge Day (January 1)...will you be participating in one of these events (or even your own)? How will you spend the first day of this brand-new year? Do you have a traditional New Year's Day menu?
No polar bear plunges for us this year. We'll be spending the first day of this brand-new year with friends at a Swedish Pancake Breakfast and then we'll head home for Vic to continue working on the deck and for me to clean up the December Daily supplies for another year. Our traditional New Year's Day menu is roast chicken with stuffing and gravy, rice, and carrots and turnips. It used to be mashed potatoes, but I know Vic prefers rice.
3. What's something that brings you joy and how will you do more of it in this new year?
Spending down-time with Vic doing the things we love. They're simple things for the most part - afternoon tea, browsing through the bookstore, a movie date, making plans for our next home improvement project. Since Vic went back to work and some of his weekend time is spent at work, it's tough to make time but we'll try our best.
4. Do you struggle with the January blues? What's one thing you can/will do to keep them at bay?
I don't struggle with the January blues. I can imagine that some struggle with the Christmas season being over, financial woes, health concerns, or ongoing miserable winter weather but I don't have a problem with any of these (for which I am very thankful). I'm at the stage in my life where I'm happy and content. My needs are met and a lot of my wants. I have a loving husband, a beautiful daughter, a comfortable home. There may be little things that bug me, but I brush them aside and as my Mum used to say, "Onwards and upwards". There's never anything to give me the January blues.
5. Will you choose your own personal word of the year for 2025? What about a goal, resolution, or maybe even a bucket list? Elaborate as much or as little as you like.
I have two words - time management. It all stems from needing to organize my time better. Less time on the computer, less time in front of the tv, I need to get myself on the timer system.
The bucket list has only one thing on it - Christmas shopping in London!
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Will there be any snow in Washington this year? We've had substantial snowfall in two of the last six years - Snowmageddon in 2019, and the Snowpocalypse in 2021. After that, really nothing. Have you had snow in your area?
Great to "hear" from you, Pam! Glad to hear that all is well with you. About snow, we have had a couple of very lights snowfalls- like less than an inch. We have been getting so.much.rain here recently but no snow. I agree with you on the January blues- so thankful it's not something I have to worry about. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's good to be back!
DeleteIt's so nice to see you back here today! I hope you're doing well. We are sunny and into the 50's today so no snow for us. Repair is a good word going forward that's for sure! And Christmas shopping in London sounds like a win to. me. Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's good to be back and yes, we're all doing well.
DeleteWe've had snow a couple of times so far this winter but nothing like what we used to get. We don't have a traditional New years (or even NYE) dinner but I'm sure we'll cook up something yummy.
ReplyDeleteI miss our days in Rhode Island, it was always lovely to have snow for the holidays.
DeleteHappy New Year, Pamela. It is lightly snowing here in NE Washington state as I type and watch the Rose Parade. Not even an inch but everything is covered in white. Shopping in London for Christmas! I can get behind that bucket list idea. Hope your deck comes together!!
ReplyDeleteI remember flying into LAX from London and the airport being awash with young people who were returning home after the Rose Parade. I haven't watched in years, need to put that on my calendar for next year.
DeleteWelcome back to blogging ! I don't think I could stop, I really need it "my window to the world" ! Here in Belgium it rains and it is grey and humid, we had 10 days of sunshine in December !!
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's good to be back. I miss our days in Belgium; we lived there for six years when I was a teenager. We lived in Mons and spent our weekends April-October at the beach near Ostend.
DeleteWelcome back to blogging. I have missed you!
ReplyDeleteI get suckered into watching TikTok videos and can't tear myself away. I need to do better too.
I hope you have had a good start to the new year, your menu sounds so good.
We are due snow over the weekend. Eek!
Happy new year, wishing you all the best for 2025.
Thank you, Kim! I would love just a little snow, just a sprinkling. Our last big snowstorms were in February, so I guess there's hope.
DeleteI always need to work on my time management as well, and that's one of the things on my 2025 personal improvement list. We have had a few little dumps of snow so far, but nothing that has stuck (in central Ohio). I always think Christmas is nicer with a bit of snow on the ground, but I'm also very glad when we don't have to drive through snow! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteYes, a light dusting on Christmas Eve so you wake up to it on Christmas Day and then it melts before everyone has to hit the road to go back to work on the day after Christmas.
DeleteNo snow here in the valley foothills but all three mountain ranges have snow and it only takes us about 30 minutes to drive up to see.
ReplyDeleteWe get a snow event once every few years where it closes down our town!
Time management is what I’ve been working on the past year.
Blessings for the New Year
Thanks for stopping by. Happy New Year!
DeleteHappy New Year and welcome back to blogworld! I know what you mean about the brain rot and time online. It can be so addictive! I don't deal with January blues either. Usually I am happy to have a clean house after putting the Christmas decor away. This year, I will be a little sad because both kids have gone back to their lives, but I plan to fill our calendar as a distraction. I'm looking forward to seeing your blog posts!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tanya, Happy New Year!
DeleteIt is supposed to snow on Sunday here. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI did notice that there are a couple of days in January with a little snowflake in the forecast! Happy New Year.
Delete#1 Fighting brain rot definitely made my list of goals for 2025.
ReplyDelete#2 We should have thought of a polar bear plunge...60+ degrees here.
#3 More reading and crafting here I hope.
#4 On the winter equinox, I start dreading the longer HOTTER days of summer. Does that count as the blues? :)
#5 My unofficial word of the year: Listen
#6 Random thought: Obviously I don't follow directions, but since it's no longer Wednesday, I just answered here.
So glad you are back! I've missed your posts.
Thanks, it's good to be back. Ugh, don't get me started on a hot summer. I know it's nowhere near like yours, but it can get hot enough for a couple of weeks.
