Saint David's Day (Welsh: Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Sant or Dydd Gŵyl Dewi), or the Feast of Saint David, is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on 1 March, the date of Saint David's death in 589 AD.
Traditional festivities include wearing daffodils and leeks, recognized symbols of Wales and Saint David, respectively, eating traditional Welsh food including cawl (a traditional Welsh soup), and women wearing traditional Welsh dress.
An increasing number of cities and towns across Wales, including Cardiff, Swansea, and Aberystwyth also put on parades throughout the day.
One of my favorite memories from our years living in the UK was a weekend trip to Wales. I took the kids and stayed on a farm, since Michael had already moved back to the states. It was so beautiful and truly a distinct culture, even though it was only about 2 hours from our home near Windsor! I would like to go back someday with Michael!
ReplyDeleteHappy Saint David’s Day to all who are celebrating (one day late). I used to love our day trips into Wales when I was a child.
