A is for Appomattox

First up in this year's Blogging from A to Z Challenge, The Beauty of Virginia, is the letter A for Appomattox.  Sound familiar?  Appomattox is known as the place where our nation reunited.  Sitting in the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is the McLean House, preserved exactly the way it stood on April 9, 1865 when General Robert E. Lee surrendered the army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant.  It's interesting to note that Appomattox Court House is actually the name of a town, and that the actual court house played no part in the surrender as it occurred on a Sunday and the court house was closed.

I suppose I should have made my A entry A is for Appomattox Court House instead of just Appomattox so as not to confuse readers.  There is the town of Appomattox (the county seat of Appomattox County), which is located near the Appomattox River.  That's a lot of Appomattoxs.

The best place to start your search for information is the Historic Appomattox website.  Here you will find all the details about annual events, attractions including museums, a living history village, and a self-guided walking tour,  as well as all the usual lodging, dining, and shopping resources.

Appomattox is on our list of places to visit in the time we have left in Virginia.  I'll leave you with these photographs which I hope will inspire you to visit Appomattox as well.

  1. I remember visiting Appomattox as a child and being totally bored. However, a couple years ago I had a different experience. Our guide was in the character of a Provost Guard. I think history museums do a much better job these days making history interesting and relevant.

  2. Funny how we were so bored with history as children and as adults we love it! We drive through VA a few times during the year as we head to GA and I love the state. Yes Appomattox is also on my list to visit there.
